Summer’s Retreat

Signs of summer’s end
On full display without remorse.
A new season nears.

Spring’s arrival brings
An auspicious sound. Return
Of the hummingbird.

Unmistakable
Sound. Wild, guttural calling.
The elk rut begins.

Hugged by the Aspen.
Kissed by the quaking leaves that
whisper their secrets.

An endless supply
surrounds. Snacking in the shade
of an apple tree.
